Summer Fun Camp News

Free intergenerational day camp with interactive STEM experiences at Kingsport Academic Village Thursday, July 18.

Space is limited for grandparents and grandchildren ages seven and up

KINGSPORT – The young and young at heart are invited to a free intergenerational fun camp Thursday, July 18, for grandparents and their grandchildren ages seven and up.

The one-day interactive STEM experience is from 1-4 p.m. and sponsored by the Kingsport Alliance for Continued Learning, a continuing education program offered through a partnership with East Tennessee State University at Kingsport to provide adults, regardless of educational background or age, opportunities to attend stimulating courses, lectures and special events.

Campers will begin at 305 West Main Street to tour Kingsport Academic Village facilities including Northeast State Community College’s Regional Center for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM) and Regional Center for Health Professions (RCHP). Door prizes and ice cream will close out the day at the Kingsport Center for Higher Education (KCHE).

At RCAM, visitors will rotate through three stations – Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) milling machine used to create items like automotive parts, household items, electronics and clothing; infrared imaging science, such as infrared thermography (IRT), thermal imaging, and thermal video; and digital instrumentation, a control room simulation using digital instrumentation and computers to control level and flow in industrial environments.

Campers will learn about cardiovascular technology at the RCHP, such as invasive and non-invasive options, as well as dental assisting, emergency medical technology, medical laboratory technology, nursing, paramedic and surgical technology.

Chemical demonstrations will cap the day at KCHE. Participants will see demonstrations of reduction-oxidation (REDOX) reactions of rusting and burning fuel, and alkali metal reactions of sodium vapor lamps, table salt and atomic clocks.

Parking for the intergenerational fun camp will be available in the City of Kingsport Clinchfield Street parking lot. The event is free to attend, but registration is required and space is limited.   To register, call 423-354-5200 or email
